Do you need a DGSA? A quick guide

If your business consigns, packs, loads or carries dangerous goods, you may be legally required to appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser. Here is how to tell.

Most businesses that handle dangerous goods in the course of transport must appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA). The requirement applies across road, rail and inland waterway, and it is easy to be caught by it without realising.

When is a DGSA required?

You almost certainly need a named adviser if any of the following apply:

  • You consign, pack, load or unload dangerous goods.
  • You carry dangerous goods by road, rail or inland waterway.
  • You handle lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, fuels or chemicals.
